|challenge||The manufacturing buildings at a major healthcare manufacturer are individually billed for their site central energy centre’s operational costs based on each building’s size. Our challenge was to reduce these costs.|
|solution||The 19 HVAC air handling systems were a major contributor to the energy costs in one particular building. Environmental Engineering undertook HVAC energy audits and presented options on how
a reduced cost base could be realised. An in-depth study of each system was undertaken to determine an accurate operational cost using local hourly weather data, first principal calculations and heat loss/gain data to create a thermal model of each area using our unique software.
The 20 year-old design of the systems was challenged and the change in use of various areas considered in providing modifications/improvements to the systems which included inverters, heat recovery, re-commissioning and free cooling.
|benefit||A saving of 35% in the annual energy costs of the building was realised with a one-year payback for the improvements.|
